Whitewater River Grading
International whitewater standards assign six grades to rivers, the higher
the grade the more challenging the river. In general, grade one rivers
are suitable for novices to navigate without a guide. In most cases, a
grade five river is the highest level that commercial rafts can navigate.
Only the most experienced paddlers should ever attempt rivers that are
given a grade six. Grade three and higher usually require that the participants
must be at least fifteen years old. Whitewater grading can vary depending
on the time of year. In spring, rivers may swell thus increase it’s grading;
in summer it may be calmer and receive a lower grade. For many who are
unsure about the sport, a river with a grading of two or three may be
a good place to start. Whitewater rafting operators usually supply helmets
and life jackets. Remember you are going to get wet so it is a good idea
to bring a change of clothing and towels to dry yourself off after the
trip.
Some whitewater safety issues should
be considered:
the guide should hold a first aid certificate;
the guide should carry a first aid kit;
the trip leader should have radio contact with Medical Air Rescue Services
(MARS) in the event of an emergency.
