Will Lessons Help?
Windsurfing can be enjoyed by young and old but if you are a beginner it is worth your time to invest in some lessons from an experienced instructor. Many experienced windsurfers will attest to the to the fact that lessons will greatly improve your skill level and your enjoyment of the sport quicker than trying to learn on your own. With 3-6 hours of instruction from a qualified instructor beginners can learn how to: maintain balance on the board; uphauling the sail from the water; powering the sail; steering; learning how to tack (turning into the wind), learning how to gybe (turning down wind); and sailing the basic directions, upwind (45 degrees to the wind), reaching (90 degrees to the wind), downwind (sailing with the wind). With these skills perfected one can safely return from where one has started.

Even if one has mastered these basic skills, lessons can improve your windsurfing skill level. You can learn how to tack more efficiently with improved footwork; learn how to gybe in lighter winds; learn how to handle stronger winds; learn how to use a harness; learn how to do shallow water starts. Continuing windsurfing lessons will increase your skill level, for more advanced moves one can learn how to use a foot strap increasing your control and speed in high winds. Other skills that can help your windsurfing experience is learning how to efficiently do deep water starts and the Carve Gybe where you turn the board much like water-skiing using the edge to turn (straps are essential for this maneuver). After getting a handle on these skills there are still more advanced windsurfing techniques that can be learned. There is an endless list of specialized Gybe techniques that can be learned to enable you to improve your control in all kinds of wind and surf conditions. You can also start learning the thrill of chop hopping, getting airborne can be one of the most exciting aspect of windsurfing. Lessons can get you wave sailing quicker than trying to learn these skills on your own.
